The Pincoya is, according to local mythology, a female "water spirit" of the Chilotan Seas. The Pincoya is said to have long blond hair, be of incomparable beauty, be cheerful and sensual, and rise from the depths of the sea.
Naked and pure, she personifies the fertility of marine species. Through her ritual dance she provides the chilote (resident of Chiloé) with an abundance or deficiency of fish and seafood. If she performs her dance facing the sea, it means that these shores will have an abundance of fish. When she dances facing the mountains, her back to the sea, seafood will be scarce.
The Tlanchana, also known as the Anchane, is a freshwater figure of the Matlatzinca.
Her appearance is that of a woman with the lower body of a snake, and is oftentimes wearing a crown, necklaces, and aquatic creatures strung around her waist. Due to European influence, later depictions portray her as a mermaid with a fish tail in the place of a serpent's. She was said to have divinatory powers and would be called upon to deliver omens. Tlanchana was not purely benevolent. If rejected, she would wrap around human men and drag them underwater to drown.
Melusine (French: [melyzin]) or Melusina is a figure of European folklore and mythology, a female spirit of fresh water in a sacred spring or river. She is usually depicted as a woman who is a serpent or fish from the waist down. She is also sometimes illustrated with wings, two tails, or both.
One tale says Melusine herself was the daughter of the fairy Pressyne and king Elinas of Albany (now known as Scotland). Melusine's mother leaves her husband, taking her daughters to the isle of Avalon after he breaks an oath never to look in at her and her daughter in their bath. The same pattern appears in stories where Melusine marries a nobleman only after he makes an oath to give her privacy in her bath; each time, she leaves the nobleman after he breaks that oath. Shapeshifting and flight on wings away from oath-breaking husbands also figure in stories about Melusine.
Undines /ˈʌndiːn, ʌnˈdiːn/ (or ondines) are a category of elemental beings associated with water, first named in the alchemical writings of Paracelsus - but developed by later writers into water nymphs in their own right.
Undines are almost invariably depicted as being female, and are usually found in forest pools and waterfalls. Although resembling humans in form, they lack a human soul, so to achieve mortality they must acquire one by marrying a human. Such a union is not without risk for the man, because if he is unfaithful, then he is fated to die.
Mami Wata (Mammy Water) is a water spirit venerated in West, Central, and Southern Africa, and in the African diaspora in the Americas.
Mami Wata is often described as a mermaid-like figure, with a woman's upper body (often nude) and the hindquarters of a fish or serpent. In other tales, Mami Wata is fully human in appearance (though never human).
A large snake (symbol of divination and divinity) frequently accompanies her, wrapping itself around her and laying its head between her breasts.
A jengu (plural miengu) is a water spirit in the traditional beliefs of the Sawa ethnic groups of Cameroon.
The miengu's appearance differs from people to people, but they are typically said to be beautiful, mermaid-like figures with long hair and beautiful gap-teeth. They live in rivers and the sea and bring good fortune to those who worship them. They can also cure disease and act as intermediaries between worshippers and the world of spirits.
The njuzu (water spirit) is an important part of Shona mythology.
They are supposed to live in deep lakes and rivers, and may lure the unwary person into the water. Those who return from this experience are more likely to become a n’anga (witchdoctor), as they have travelled between the physical and spiritual worlds.
Njuzu are thought of as mermaids, human on the top half and fish-like below, and are a common theme in Zimbabwean sculpture.
In Greek mythology, the Sirens (Greek singular: Σειρήν, Seirḗn; Greek plural: Σειρῆνες, Seirênes) were dangerous creatures, who lured nearby sailors with their enchanting music and singing voices to shipwreck.
Sirens were believed to look like a combination of women and birds in various different forms.
The seventh-century Anglo-Latin catalogue Liber Monstrorum says that Sirens were women from their heads to their navels, and instead of legs they had fish tails.
By the Middle Ages, the figure of the siren has transformed into the enduring mermaid figure.
Atargatis /əˈtɑːrɡətɪs/ or Ataratheh (/əˈtærəθə/; Aramaic: 'Atar'atheh or Tar'atheh) was the chief goddess of northern Syria in Classical antiquity.
Doves and fish were considered sacred to her: doves as an emblem of the Love-Goddess, and fish as symbolic of the fertility and life of the waters.
She is sometimes described as a mermaid-goddess, due to identification of her with a fish-bodied goddess at Ascalon. However, there is no evidence that Atargatis was worshipped at Ascalon, and all iconographic evidence shows her as anthropomorphic.
Suvannamaccha (Thai: สุพรรณมัจฉา; RTGS: Suphannamatcha or Suphan Matcha; Khmer: សុវណ្ណមច្ឆា; Sovann Maccha; Sanskrit: सुवर्णमत्स्य, suvarṇamatsya; literally "golden fish") is a daughter of Tosakanth (demon king) appearing in the Thai and other Southeast Asian versions of Ramayana. She is a mermaid princess who tries to spoil Hanuman's (Hindu God of strength and knowledge) plans to build a bridge to Lanka but falls in love with him instead.
The figure of Suvannamaccha is popular in Thai folklore and is represented on small cloth streamers or framed pictures that are hung as luck-bringing charms in shops and houses throughout Thailand.
In Slavic folklore, the rusalka (plural: rusalki; Cyrillic: русалка; Polish: rusałka) is a female entity, often malicious toward mankind and frequently associated with water. Folklorists have proposed a variety of origins for the entity, including that they may originally stem from Slavic paganism, where they may have been seen as benevolent spirits. Rusalki appear in a variety of media in modern popular culture, particularly in Slavic language-speaking countries, where they frequently resemble the concept of the mermaid.
The rusalki were believed to be at their most dangerous during the Rusalka Week (Cyrillic: Русальная неделя, romanized: Rusalnaya nedelya) in early June. At this time, they were supposed to have left their watery depths in order to swing on branches of birch and willow trees by night. Swimming during this week was strictly forbidden, lest mermaids would drag a swimmer down to the river bed.
The Yawkyawk is a female creature originating in the mythology of the Kunwinjku people of Western Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, Australia.
It is a creature similar to the typical mermaid in appearance, and has seaweed for hair. Seaweed that floats up to the water's surface is said, by Aboriginal people, to come from the head of a Yawkyawk.
While this creature's normal form has the upper body of a humanoid female, and the lower part of a fish, it is also capable of shapeshifting. Among its favoured forms are that of a crocodile, dragonfly, snake or swordfish.
Another power the Yawkyawk was believed to possess includes the ability to manipulate the weather, such as bringing nourishing rain, or sending storms on those who make them angry.
Pania, often styled "Pania of the Reef", is a figure of Māori mythology.
Pania was a beautiful maiden who lived in the sea. By daylight she swam about with other sea creatures but after sunset would go to a stream that ran into the bay where the city of Napier now sits.
She fell in love with chief's son and they secretly married, but he grew frustrated as he couldn’t show her off with her frequent trips to the sea.
Following a sage’s advice, he attempted to force feed her cooked food to stop her from returning to the sea, but she awoke and ran away.
Sometimes she can be seen beckoning him to her.
Ningyo (人魚, "human fish", often translated as "mermaid") is a fish-like creature from Japanese folklore.
Anciently, it was described with a monkey's mouth with small teeth like a fish's, shining golden scales, and a quiet voice like a skylark or a flute. Its flesh is pleasant-tasting, and anyone who eats it will attain remarkable longevity. However, catching a ningyo was believed to bring storms and misfortune, so fishermen who caught these creatures were said to throw them back into the sea. A ningyo washed onto the beach was an omen of war or calamity.

Under soft moonlight, our mermaid comes ashore as a Silkie, at the secluded Silver Strand, on the Donegal Coast.
Gently shedding her seal coat, she reveals her human form – a beautiful dark haired maiden with deep, soulful eyes.
Dancing along the sand, revelling in the freedom she enjoys in both worlds, she is unaware of the young fisherman captivated by her beauty.
She turns, their eyes meet and their love is set.
Our Silkie makes her home with her fisherman but the sea restlessly calls to her drawing her back to the water.
The call becomes so strong that she must leave her love and return to the ocean forever.
The magic is everywhereOur original Silkie Irish Whiskey has a character as rich as the mythical tales that inspire us.
The Silkie is blended for a signature softness; with hints of apple and pear; an easy maltiness, orange zest, hob nob biscuits, and just the merest hint of smoke.

The Legendary Silkie Cask Series will become a range of tiny releases finished in different casks that develop the core blend taste, tell a rich story and sometimes just for the divilment.
The first in a series of limited-edition releases from The Legendary Silkie Irish Whiskey Collection, Red Silkie is inspired by the final journey of Donegal nobleman, Red Hugh O’Donnell and is finished in both Rioja and Ribera del Duero wine casks, giving an aromatic sweetness with dry wine notes.
The legendary Red Silkie takes our original Silkie blend and then enjoys a 6 month slumber in Ribero del Duero casks for the dry, clove, spice notes and candied peel character.
Finishing in Cask | Barrel | Disgorge |
---|---|---|
6 months | 45% Rioja Casks | TBC |
5 months | 55% Ribera de Duero Casks | TBC |
Non Chill Filtered
